What is a High Frequency Wand?

A high-frequency wand is a small, usually portable device that uses thermal energy to zap acne, boost collagen, enhance skin oxygenation, and target hyperpigmentation. A small glass applicator filled with neon or argon gas generates a gentle electrical current to treat the skin. Oxygenating the skin in this way has a wide range of benefits, particularly for acne-prone skin, as acne-causing bacteria typically won’t survive in this oxygen-rich environment.

What is a High-Frequency Facial?

A high-frequency facial is an in-clinic procedure that uses a high-frequency wand to treat the skin, even though professional treatment may use more powerful devices, high-frequency wands for at-home use are now widely available and offer similar results in the treatment of acne, inflammation, redness, and skin texture. At-home high-frequency devices allow for more consistent treatments, and consistency is key to achieving results with these types of devices. Often we don’t have time for frequent salon visits and an at-home investment allows us to zap acne as it appears, key for preventing further scarring and skin damage.

What are the Benefits of a High-Frequency Wand?

High-frequency is a hugely versatile skin and hair treatment with a wide range of applications, including

The treatment and prevention for acne: thermal energy eliminates acne-causing bacteria and regulates oil production
Collagen regeneration: Supports the formation of new collagen
Lymphatic draining: Expels excess fluid to reduce puffiness
Redness and inflammation: Soothes redness, stimulates blood flow and calms irritated skin
Supports hair growth and scalp health: Prolongs the active hair growth and reduces DHT, a hormone associated with hair loss, boosts follicular health to promote hair growth

How to Use a High-Frequency Wand For Acne?

High-frequency wands are most associated with the treatment of acne and have been scientifically proven to reduce acne-causing bacteria by 97.8% and some studies have shown a 30% reduction in acne-causing bacteria P.acnes after just one minute.*

  1. Cleanse and dry your face.
  2. Insert a small rod-like applicator (below) into the wand.
  3. Turn on the device to low setting to begin with, on the Project E Beauty device this is about 1-2.
  4. Touch the applicator when your finger and hold it there until the rod has made contact with the treatment area, this prevents a sparking effect.
  5. Place the top of the rod applicator onto the pimple and hold for 12 seconds.
  6. Follow up with your acne-friendly skincare routine.

Do High-Frequency Wands Hurt?

No, high-frequency wands are generally painless. There may be a mild ‘shock’ sensation when you place the wand on your skin initially, to minimize this it is advisable to tap your finger on the glass rod before placing it on your skin. Remove your finger as you place it on the treatment area. While high-frequency wands are painless, you will likely experience a slight tingling feeling. It may take a few sessions to get used to the zapping noise, but you should not experience any pain.

Are High-Frequency Wands Safe?

Yes, high-frequency wands are generally considered to be a very safe at-home treatment, when used correctly, as will all technology, they will carry inherent risks. In order to minimize the risk of injury, some general guidelines should be followed

Start slow: The Project E Beauty high-frequency wand has 11 intensity settings, this level of customization is very valuable in an at-home device as it allows you to tailor your treatment as your skin adjusts to the new technology. Always start on a lower setting and increase as tolerance increases.

Conduct a patch test: This is especially important for sensitive skin. Before treating your face, conduct a patch test on the inner forearm to prevent any adverse reaction.

Stick to the recommended treatment time: Most high-frequency devices will come with usage guidelines, at Project E Beauty, we recommend using the wand for 10 minutes, 3-4 times per week to begin with. Treat individual acne pimples for 12-15 seconds at a time. The 10-minute treatment time is for the entire face. Always stick to the recommended usage to prevent injury.

Melasma: High-frequency wands contain small amounts of UV light, if you have melasma, it is best not to use the wand on this area to prevent aggravating this further.

Medical condition: If you have a medical condition, we always advise checking in with your docotor before introducing a high-frequency wand into your routine.

The Takeaway: Do High-Frequency Wands Hurt?

No, high-frequency treatments should not cause any pain but you may experience a mild shock at the start of the treatment. We recommend holding your finger on the glass applicator until you begin your treatment to avoid this. The tingling sensation and buzzing sound may be a litte unsettling at first, but you will soon relax into the treatment. Always stick to usage times to ensure you get the most from your device.
